Eligibility questions:

Is your Company, Yourself (individuals including health professionals) Partnership or Trust:

  • Involved in developing a new product or process?
  • Involved in improving  existing products or process?
  • Invested in or have plans to invest significantly in technology?

Then you may be eligible to receive SR&ED credits from Revenue Quebec and CRA.

What is the time frame?

SR&ED claims must be filed within 18 months from the fiscal year-end of the claimant. Accordingly, you may be eligible for a maximum of two claims within a given period. CRA does not allow late or incomplete submissions under any circumstances. Once this 18 month time frame expires, you will have lost this potential entitlement permanantly

What amount can be received as a credit or refund?

In the situation of a Quebec based CCPC (Canadian Controlled private corporation), the potential refund can be as high as 85% of expenditures incurred in eligible expenditures between both the Federal an Quebec governments. The SR&ED credit is refundable totally only for CCPC's. For all others, the credit is adjusted against current taxes payable, against taxes paid in prior years ( refund of prior years taxes paid ), or against taxes payable in the future.

The CRA's web site explains the (SR&ED) Program more fully as follows:

"What is the SR&ED Program?

The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program is a federal tax incentive program to encourage Canadian businesses of all sizes and in all sectors to conduct research and development (R&D) in Canada that will lead to new, improved, or technologically advanced products or processes. The SR&ED program is the largest single source of federal government support for industrial R&D.

Claimants can apply for SR&ED investment tax credits for expenditures such as wages, materials, machinery, equipment, some overhead, and SR&ED contracts.

It should be noted that the CRA is responsible for administering the SR&ED program, while the Department of Finance is responsible for the legislation that governs it.

Who qualifies?

Generally, a Canadian-controlled private corporation (CCPC) can earn an investment tax credit (ITC) of 35% up to the first $3 million of qualified expenditures for SR&ED carried out in Canada, and 20% on any excess amount. Other Canadian corporations, proprietorships, partnerships, and trusts can earn an ITC of 20% of qualified expenditures for SR&ED carried out in Canada."

Tax Info Online

In 2002, A. Bertucci,CPA,CA introduced its Internet tax data collector which enables our clients to submit their tax information electronically. Clients will be guided through an  interview process that is convenient and easy to use.

We chose to offer this service to our clients because:

- It uses the convenience of the internet together with high-encryption browser security.

- Your data is safely stored with the same security measures used for online banking and trading.

- It has an easy-to-use interview process.

- It features the intuitive QuikClik method which lets you jump directly to the screens you need.

- It enables you to view completed screens, monitor your progress, and print a summary of your input. You can even leave notes and questions along with you information.

Here’s how the internet data tax collector works: To use this service, contact us at taxinfo@abertucci.com and we will provide you with your username and password. Keep in mind that your password is your key to your tax file, and as such, it should remain completely confidential.

From our web site, go to the Links page and click “Personal Tax Login” to link to the tax data collector.

You will be taken to a secure website which will verify some of your browser’s settings, as it will require being able to support 128-bit encryption. If your computer or browser fails any of the checks, don’t worry, these limitations are all very easy to overcome. For more information, please see our Frequently Asked Questions.

Enter your username and password.

In your file, you will find your name and address, and those of your family members. Please verify this information for accuracy.

You may move through the tax data collector simply by clicking the “Next” button and entering data in each relevant screen as it appears. Alternatively, you may use the interview navigation window located on the left-hand side of the screen to prompt the display of specific entry fields.

Other family members are listed in the top left-hand corner of the screen. To access them, select a name form the list.

To leave the application, click on the “Log Out” button in the top centre of the screen.

You may return as many times as you need in order to plan and complete your return.

Once you have entered and reviewed all of your tax data, clock the “Submit Tax File” button from the toolbar.

Note! Whether your tax return is filed electronically or on paper, the governments still require that we receive your tax slips and receipts for review and verification prior to filing your return. Please send all supporting documents to:

A. Bertucci, CA Tax Info Online Section 1445 Lambert Closse, 2nd Floor Montreal, QC H3H 1Z5

Be sure to include all relevant slips and receipts (i.e. income, tuition, RRSP, donations, medical expenses, etc.) If you are unsure about what you need to submit, it is better to include supporting documents than omit them.

Our office will contact you as soon as soon as we have reviewed your tax information and prepared your tax return(s).
